WHY I'M RUNNING FOR MALC CHAIR
Representative Ramon Romero Jr. Announces Bid for Chair of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus
October 4, 2024 — Texas – Representative Ramon Romero, Jr., a long-standing advocate for the Latino community and current member of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus (MALC), is excited to announce his candidacy for Chair of MALC. After receiving support and encouragement from colleagues, Rep. Romero has decided to enter the race, determined to lead the bipartisan caucus in its continued mission to uplift the Latino community across Texas.
"Over the past few days, I've been humbled by the encouragement from many of my colleagues to run for MALC Chair," said Rep. Romero. "This is a role I have been considering for months, but the confidence of my peers has inspired me to take the next step and formally join the race."
Founded over 50 years ago, MALC was established to strengthen Latino representation and advocate for a united Latino constituency in Texas. Since then, the state's Hispanic population has grown by 500%, creating new opportunities and challenges for the community.
"Our caucus is stronger than ever, and we must ensure that we are laser-focused on the issues central to MALC's mission," Rep. Romero continued. "We have a responsibility to ensure we are doing everything in our power to support and uplift the Latino community across the state of Texas."
In addition to focusing on the core mission of MALC, Rep. Romero highlighted the importance of continued financial stability for the caucus. Over the past few days, he reached out to key sponsors and supporters and received positive feedback and encouragement to run for Chair.
"It is essential that the next Chair is able to raise the funds necessary to operate and sustain the caucus's initiatives. I am deeply grateful for the support and confidence expressed by our major sponsors, and I look forward to working with them to further strengthen MALC. I am honored to be in this race and look forward to earning the confidence and vote of my fellow caucus members. Together, we can move forward with a plan to serve our Hispanic constituencies and continue the proud tradition of the oldest and largest Latino legislative caucus in the country,” stated Rep. Romero.
